The Junior Order United American Mechanics National Orphan’s Home, known as the Jr. Home, was significant in American history as an example of self-contained residential institutions that flourished in latter 19th and early 20th century America. The Jr. Home was a place “associated with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad patterns of America’s history.”

Albert D. Couch, 84, of Charlotte, died May 4, 2008 at Presbyterian Hospital. Albert Couch was born April 19, 1924 in Statesville, NC to the late Fred F. and Hessie Mitchell Couch. He retired in 1989 after 35 years with Standard Insulating Company, Inc. His childhood was spent in a Junior Order United American Home in Tiffin, Ohio and Lexington, NC. In the US Army in World War II, he was stationed in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines. He was a member of Green Memorial Baptist Church and an honorary member of the Sportsman Club of Charlotte. Survivors include his beloved wife of 58 years, Lucille Hoffman Couch; two sons, Alan B. Couch and wife, Paulette of Mint Hill, NC and Alvin B. Couch and wife, Christine of Indian Trail, NC; five grandchildren, Eric, Brett, Adam, Lucas and Claire; and brother, George Couch and wife, Edith of Statesville, NC. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 from 6:00 until 9:00 PM at Carolina Funeral Service and Cremation Center, 5505 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC. The family requests memorials be made to the American Children's Home, P.O. Box 1288, Lexington, NC 27293-1288 or Green Memorial Baptist Church, 1324 The Plaza, Charlotte, NC 28205.
